Citronellaoil is a volatile oil, which is distilled using steam distillationprocess from the greenish blue, lemon-scented leaves and stemof the plant Cymbopogon nardus (Ceylon citronella) orCymbopogon winteratus (Java type citronella).
Theleaves of citronella plant (Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt) aredistilled to obtain valuable oil. Citronella Essential Oil is asource of important perfumery chemicals like citronellal,citronellol and geraniol, which find extensive use in soap,perfumery, cosmetic and flavouring industries.
Trade Wise, citronellaoil is categorised into two types:
1) Ceylon citronella oil - Cymbopogon nardus Rendle,(inferior type)
2) Java citronella oil - Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt,(superior type)
